02.15.11 The time I was cured.

About twelve days into February I had the winter blues bad. The snowy-wet-freezing my face off-never leave the couch-winter blues. But this weekend I was cured. And this is how it went about.
Saturday 11:00 A.M started with friends on a mountain, attempting to snowshoe disappearing snow. Yes, the snow is disappearing and that means spring is slightly emerging. Everything about being up there was energizing. Mckays teeth wigging out to the warmish winter weather. Riana wearing combat gear. Four dogs (one the size of a horse) flying down the mountain trail. But the most energizing was the view of Timp looming above me, and knowing I will be up there as soon as the peak is clear of snow.

1:30 It was at least 52 degrees outside, Dusty fired up the Harley and gave her a good scrub. Just seeing him drive down the road on the back of that bike with a big smile was more then enough to cure the blues. When he came back he proceeded to turn on the garden house and water the grass while saying "Its officially the first day of summer" Not quite Dust, but keep dreaming.
2.00 P.M Riana trimmed an inch of winter off my hair and dyed it a lovely summer-time hue. I showered, shampooed, and combed out the matts and rats that have been there waaay to long. I feel refreshed and renewed. (I just let you in on my horrible hair hygiene.. yes I hardly ever brush my hair)

Sunday 7:00 A.M Waking up to sun rays streaming through the window. It wasn't even hard to get out of bed. I wanted to greet that beautiful February morning.

12:00-2:00 P.M outdoor activities took place. Park strolling, dog chasing, even some Frisbee. It felt like an easter spring sunday. I had to keep telling myself it was February.

2.08.11 A Road

Theres a road between Phoenix and flagstaff that I don't want to forget.
It follows a river and is lined by trees. It was like driving through a wet and rainy jungle but being in the middle of a desert at the same time, very confusing. The bright sun combined with the rain drops to make diamonds on the road and our windshield. I stuck my face out the wind to feel the diamond drops, but you couldn't feel them. I think they just wisped away with the wind... again, very confusing.
It wound up and up a mountain like a fast tornado. We never got dizzy, we just kept driving and winding. When we reached the very tip top we stopped to look out, wonder, and take it all in.

1.13.01 Destination

I love exploring new places, even if its in my home state of Utah. When a friend invited Dust and I to go to Joe's Valley near the dead center of Utah, we were on board.

I think most people see Central Utah as a weird and awkward place, a part of the state you just drive through to get to St.George or Moab. And when you do drive through, there is nothing to see expect road kill and sagebrush. But personally I like sagebrush, and I like central Utah. Lots of weirdo towns and very interesting people, and now Joe's Valley!

Joe's had a lot more then sagebrush to offer, Its actually known for its gorgeous sandstone boulders, with hundreds of bouldering routes. Bouldering is new to me, its like rock climbing with out the ropes and harness, and instead of climbing up a huge mountain wall you try to reach the top of a boulder. It's actually really hard and takes mega amounts of patience and practice. Having really buff arms help a lot too.

2010; the year of the roller coaster.. Sometimes the ride was really high and sometimes super low. Sometimes it made me so sick or mad that I wanted to barf, other times I could feel the wind blowing through my hair thinking life couldn't get any better. But over-all it was thrilling for both Dusty and I.

TOP THRILLING MOMENTS OF 2010:

I am predicting that 2011 will be less like a coaster and more like a river. A steady flowing river that travels far across the country, with a few exciting rapids now and then.

1.04.11 Adventure Yurt

Both Dustin and I had never been winter camping before and weren't sure we ever wanted to. Call me crazy, but sleeping in fort made of snow doesn't sound fun to me. But we are always up for a new adventure, and when we stumbled upon the option of snowshoeing 4 miles to a yurt on top of a snowy peak we couldn't pass it up. Not really knowing what to expect, we packed our bags for the mountains the best we could and headed North-East for this new adventure.

On December 27, we were to meet Ranger Rhett near Limber Flag Trailhead. When we pulled up Rhett was there waiting for us with a big ole mountain man beard frosted with ice. (Kicking myself for not getting a picture of him). He told us a huge storm hit last week and no one has been able to make it to the yurt since. He offered to give us a ride on his snowmobile as far as he could then let us trek it the rest of the way, hoping we would have a better chance of reaching the yurt.

So, we snowmobiled about three miles until the snow was too deep for Rhett to go any farther. Then he just dropped us off gave us a brief direction to follow and drove away. No turning back now...

I was a bit nervous but all was well, because after trekking only a mile up-hill I spotted the Yurt, our home for the next three days! The yurt was on top of a small mt. peak, with a snowy meadow surrounded by pine trees just below. From our door we had an amazing view of the winter sky where the sunsets would give us a show every evening. I would have to say it was at least in my top three of most peaceful places I have ever encountered. TOP THREE!

Our days were simply spent building warm fires in the wood burning stove, making soul warming soups, playing lots of Greedy/Farkle, and just enjoying being married for two years. I was really hoping to see a wild moose, but no luck this time.

We had to cut the trip short and leave a day early due to a monster storm rolling in. The hike back to civilization was pretty rough; A very tiring 4 1/2 miles through a arctic blizzard. But we finally made it back to the car unfrozen and with a winter adventure that we will never forget.

My first Christmas Tree -

Decorated with postcards, globes, keys, glitter feathers, vintage ornaments, and other odds and ends. Lots of turqoise, red, and silver/gold, I am in love! Its definitely looks like I decorated it. MUCH Thanks to my mom for picking me up some great ornaments over the years. She knows me to well.

I am feeling really excited to watch Home Alone tonight, and spend time with family tomorrow. And of course to celebrate the birth of Christ on Saturday. Such a beautiful time of year!

Welcome Winter, bring on the snow! And the snowshoeing!

For the record I am a summer girl; I live for all things sun. My soul NEEDS the sun. But during the long dark months of December and January, I say bring on the snow!

Today we were hit with an Arctic Blast! I woke up to lots and lots of snow out my window, just Lady winters little way of saying Happy Winter Solstice.

We have been snowshoeing a bit to prep for a Yurt excursion after Christmas. We will need to be able to bust out three miles in deep powder with three days of food on our backs? We have lots of prepping to do! I am beyond excited and also nervous...

On another note; Christmas is upon us and I am not quite ready. Still have wrapping to do and want to make some wassail, preferably McKay's recipe. She said it will make your house smell delicious for days. And in the mean time need to pack in more snowshoeing before the 27th, hmm. The good news is we have built our annual Gingy Bread house, made yummy candy with the family, and the Christmas tree is glowing more then ever.

Riana knows just about every animal track, I swear. She also knows how to cook a real good breakfast. I kinda feel bad for throwing alot of snowballs at her, but at least she had a sled for a shield.

The snow couldn't have been more packable and perfect for a snowball fight. And the slope down to the beautiful cabin made a good hill for sledding. After this weekend, I decided I might have to invest in a Cabin when I grow up, complete with a fireplace and a big windows to see the snowy trees.

Its been awhile since I have been on this blog of peace and love, but tonight was a night for blogging.

Its 3 a.m. and I can't sleep. If you know me, this is rare. Sleeping comes real easy to me. Once my head hits a pillow I am out... but not tonight.Tonight is a night to be excited for life. All the warm fires roaring in my fireplace and the cups of hot cocoa have lifted my little spirit high.

The Wasatch mountains outside my window look beautiful with a blanket of white. When mountains are covered in snow they look amazing to me, unreal, like the peaks could never be reached in a million years. But then I think about when the spring sun melts the cold away, I will be on the peaks looking across the valley. Don't you love the change of seasons. I love it, and hate it all at the same time. I never want summer or fall to leave, but when I see those unreal mountains.. thats when winter is finally welcomed.

Tonight the Teepee house is ready and waiting for Christmas and the New Year. It will be our first here and we will be celebrating Dustin and Kylee Style...I don't wanna waste a single minute, not even to sleep.

Tonight I have so much to say, write, talk, document, and journal, but I will save some for later. I think its time to crawl back into bed. Dusty has a cold and he needs someone to keep him warm... and I need to warm up too, our computer room is colder then the arctic!

It was the summer of 2008. I was single, had messy hair, dirt on my face, smelt like smoke from last nights bon-fire. Soaking in nature with daily hikes followed by late night bike rides. I was free, living the life I wanted to...

Fast forward to the summer of 2010. And to my suprise, I am still that exact same girl doing the exact same things. But with a little less dirt on my face (I have to look some what presentable for my job) and of course married.

Married..Sometimes that word still seems so foreign to me. I am 21 for hells sake! I should be traveling the world, meeting new people, seeing new things.

But no, I shouldnt be. I don't want to be. With every single peice of my heart and soul, I don't wanna be anywhere in the world without Dustin. I love having that someone to smell like campfire with me. The someone who loves the way my hair is messy. But not only someone. Dustin. I have never met anyone like him, he is the biggest hearted punk with the bluest eyes and I love him.

Intense I know. But so very true! I feel like standing on top of a mountain and telling the world how I feel about this man.

This place we are at in our lives is good.

Things I have learned so far:

1. April is way too early to plant a garden and my mom knew it. I was just too excited and anxious to get my hands dirty and insisted that the end of april was "warm" enough for veggies to grow. Wait until after mothers day, you still might get a random snowstorm or two. (see #2)

2. Utah has the most unpredictable weather. Its very frustrating for you and your crops.

3. Dont just sit there and watch your plants grow, you most likely won't see any movement. They seem to grow alot faster when you are busy doing other things! Like weeding!

4. Your mom knows best. Even if she is not a gardener, she probably still knows best. When I left for vacation, my garden was in a pretty sad state. Not one of my seeds had broken ground yet. So I left my mom to the test. With the garden in her care for a week everything now looks lively and delicious. Bless her green thumb.

5. The first time you get to eat some of your bounty its pure sweet bliss. Yesterday I made a bagel sandwich for lunch and added some lettuce straight for the garden... yep, pure sweet crunchy lettucey bliss.

BATTLECREEK CANYON - I love that this trail follows a river for about two miles with an occasional waterfall here and there. The sound of water while hiking really calms and relaxes me. Ecspecially while going straight up-hill and getting your butt kicked. Once you reach the top there is many meadows to explore with misty trees, green grass, and gopher holes. We set up camp where we had a up-close view of the snowy wasatch mountains. But beware, in May it still gets very chilly at night and the meadows will be covered in frost when you wake up - which may cause a cold. cough cough

In t-minus one week we leave for a backpacking excursion to Havasupai, Arizona. A magical place with turqouise waterfalls and wild dogs.
Dust and I have been preparing all week and gathering up our gear. I love draggin out my goods that have been hiding away all winter. They just reak with adventures waiting to happen. Or maybe they reak of sweaty hikers and dehydrated food. Not sure which.

For his birthday I gave him just that.

Dustin has always wanted to paraglide. Always. So for a lil' b-day present I got him one ticket to soar the sky. After one lesson he is already pro and addicted. I have created a monster. Maybe I will just have become a monster myself and join in on the flying fun. Paragliding lessons for two?

Me thinks so.

On another note, The point of the mountain is amazing. No, I am not talking about near the prison. I am talking about the top of the mountain. Even for non-paragliders.

Me, being a present non-paraglider was having a blast at the top just watching the Eagles launch. People were camped out on the grassy meadow eating breakfast under a sky of gliders.

Definatley a site worth seeing if you live close.

Saturday was spent in the yard from sun up to sun down and I couldn't have loved it more. The dirt was hoed into hills, the veggies were planted in their places, and everything feels just right.

Thanks to my wonderful mother

But really, I couldnt have done it with out my mom. She is one hard working momma machine and she has such a passion for gardening even down to the tiniest flower. I truly am her daughter and can just feel it when I get my hands in that dirt. I hope to at least have half the knowledge that she has someday. But I feel that my passion for all things flowers is just right behind hers.

Next I will share all the helpful tips my mom was spitting out as we were going plant happy. Oh, How I love being a gardening girl!

I spent all yesterday evening pulling weeds and plantin flowers. I was feeling very "one" with the dirt and nothing could stop my groove... until a mangy dog ran through our open door into the house. I like mangy dogs. I probably would have kept him if he didnt go easily. When the yard work was done and dinner was made, it was still warm enough to eat outside. Food tastes better when you eat outside among the mangy dogs and daffodils.

Late last night Dustin and I sat by the fire, flipping through our world encycloypedia. Each page a new country and amazing pictures just asking for you to jump in through the book. Then sparked fake arguments of why this place would be more awesome to visit then that place. But in the end I was taken aback of how big and beautiful this earth is and how much of it I haven't seen.

So all day I have been daydreaming about traveling. Seeing the world hand in hand with the one I love. Sailing a ship off to some secret island. Riding freakin' camels through a vast desert. Being anywhere, but here in snowville, utah!

Because this year will by my first time planting a garden, I have feeling it will be a trail run with lots of mistakes. I thought it would be fun and helpful to document the little steps I take along the way. That way, next year I can look back and know what to do, what not to do, & really get down to business. Here it goes! Oh, and dont be afraid to chime in with ANY advice you got

Step #1: A little inspiration:

When I think of a garden, I think of the one I grew up in. Pebble walkways, veggies growing every which way, growboxes of strawberries and delicious tomatoes, herbs mixed in here and there. It was simply beautiful. My favorite was to sit in the sun next to the plants and eat peas and peppers straight from the vine...

So, I think step #2 is to take my vision of a garden mixed with the actual space I have to work with and come up with some sort of layout. Wish me luck.

We just completed weekend #2 in our little tan house.

Boxes are unpacked, walls have been painted, and the blue piano is now being played.

But only by Dustin. He is already on book #2 of Learn Piano.

I just like to sit and listen,

Dustin also got a haircut during weekend #2.

Its $7.99 week at great clips.

They did a good job of cleanin' up that hobo hair of his.

I miss it already. Sometimes I really want to be hobos/vagabonds and set out to find America....

Dear Thursday,

This world moves too fast. The weeks have been flyin by lately... and instead of being aboard the airplane, I have been the bird flying behind just tryin to keep up. But it's super hard to keep up because commerical airplanes fly about 500 mph and if I was an eagle I would be flyin at the speed of only 44 mph.

But last night as me and dust sat down to share a pizza at the pie, timed stopped for just a moment.

The pizza was delicious,
the atmosphere was my kind,
and the company was great (the company was dustin of course)

I decided that I like being an eagle.

soooo much fun seeing the lil' kiddies reactions. Some of them thought they were legit and are probably searching in piles of dirt as I type.

My sister has a friend named September. I wonder if someone out there has the name November... I don't doubt it. Today I have been thinking back on October, which was soooo long ago. Halloween weekend was full of delicious Indian food, sweet songs from the Utah Symphony and a Excellent Halloween Party (kudos to Addie). But apart from last weekend, I have been feeling a little lazy . So in attempt to cure the lazys, I thought up a quick list to get me inspired for the new month of November. Oh, how I do love fresh new months.

I find when I write goals down, (handwritten or virtually) I am more likely to achive them. So this is for my own personal well being. Infact, this whole blog is pretty much for own personal well being. When I blog about those silly or exciting moments it makes me more grateful for this life that I live, and when I need to vent about that bad day... I come here and write down my troubles, but then see the happy posts and am reminded how great life really is.

The most wonderful thing happened last week. It started a little like this, I brushed my teeth, hopped into bed and fell fast asleep like any normal night... When I woke up I was lying on a bed of colorful leaves, next to a soft-flowing river. The air smelt like jack-o-laterns, and the clouds dropped apple cider rain. The scarves and boots were handed out free, and everyone felt free... so we danced.

We danced until the harvest moon came and went.

Morning greeted us with pumpkin pancakes with white whipped cream.

Then we had to go to work for some lady named Autumn??

Yesteday he brought home a pair of earrings. The earrings are silver feathers with a green stone. I think i will wear them everyday.

i needed to go outside and play so i did

dusty came with me, and it was fun...

We played/hiked 18 beautiful miles. The next day we were left very sore, but it was lovely because we just lazed around and watched Lord of the Rings.

i forgot how much i love middle earth... i will not forget again.

we had listened to the wind blow & watched the sun rise, so now it was time to travel home. but before we saddled back up in the truck i made one last stop on the streets of portland... an intresting stop.

there was the most eccentric girl. She was young, with a classy mohawk hairstyle, and her clothes were straight up from the forties. On her lap was an ancient type writer and a sign posted that read.

As we pulled into Portland, our truck seemed to find its way to the farmers market. It knows us too well... Farmers Markets have prime people watching. Its my most favorite part. And let me tell you, the Portland market was a real treat. It had its fair share of hippies and tree-huggers, jesus freaks, gothics, master violin players, cowboys, mullets & mohawks, old ladies with pink aprons, twins, men yelling obscenities...

you know, the cream of the crop.

Dusty didnt waste no time with the people, his heart was set on one thing, fresh picked berries. He loves berries:

raspberries, cherries, strawberries, shnozberries,

every-berry ever.

Portland was his berry heaven.

I like berries... but I would take a fresh garden tomato over anything

Once we crossed the Oregon state line i never looked back. It was everything i have always hoped for. A hippie/don't have to do your hair/men with beards paradise. Me and dusty fit right in. Grants pass is where we ended up first. we met two guys that gave us the low down of the area. They were awesome, no teeth, nasty scars, and all. Then came long bearded Wild Bill. He knew everything in the world about tomatoes. He even bought us a tomato plant to take home and told us how to fertilize it with chopsticks???? Man, when those tomatoes start growing, i just know they are gonna be the best.

I loved the people in Oregon. It was my favorite part, tied with the trees, the wild blackberries, and everything else.

Next we went river rafting on the Rouge River. it was too awesome for pictures and words. but look how stoked we were.

the rapids taught us a valuable lesson of respect. i will never tell a river to eat it again. After that, it was time to drive the high mountains till we saw the bluest thing known to man kind, Crater Lake

Crater lake is the deepest lake in the U.S. I know cause i dived down and touched the bottom. It took a really long time. The island you see is for pure blood wizards only. So of course me and dustin could visit. What we did there is confidential. We left the lake with only one thing on our mind.

We were well on our way to find the giants, but night was coming quickly. We needed to find a place to camp before the sunset. Along the 101 there is dirt roads that go off every which way. To the left, the rigid cali coast miles away; to the right, vineyard covered hills...I was completely taken by the vineyards. rows of grapes climbed every hill in site. We were in Northern California now and it was as if we were in another world. We took a sharp right and started up a dirt road called "shimmer". this road was rough, rocky, & steep....after 10 minutes of this we came to the top of Napa valley. Looking out, it was as if vineyards had taken over the earth. We then found the perfect pull off and went straight to snuggling right up in our truck bed. it was so easy to fall asleep that night...the trip had been good to us so far.

morning came and we drove down shimmer. Onward. we made a quick stop at the nearest town to drive through a tree? and mail off some postcards. This is the exact moment Johnny came in to our lives, a hitch-hiker, a fellow vagabond. His story: from Hawaii. moved to Seattle. traveled to sanfran w/ friends for a wedding. van broke down. NEEDED to get back to Seattle to start a job. decided to hitch-hike. got mugged in a park. money stolen. clothes stolen. now stranded in nowhere Leggetts, Cali. picked up by us (don't worry he wasn't naked). took him as far as we could. gave him a poptart. said our goodbyes. and that was that. vagabond to vagabond. Don't you sometimes wonder about those random people you meet? what their real story is? I wonder if Johnny made it home ok. I wonder if he will ever walk through a park, at night, alone again. anyways... onward, the giants were close. again driving along the 101. The vineyards were gone now, the roads were getting thinner, the trees were getting taller. This was the place the giants lived... the giant redwood trees.

the trees blew our minds. enough said.

now that we had seen the tallest, it was time for the deepest.

We said our goodbyes to tahoe right after the sun came up.

I never knew that place was so beautiful.

Once again we were on the road. but not for very long, the next stop wasn't so far away... i swear i could see the golden gate as soon as we pulled away from the lake.

Dear San Fransisco,

Good Morning. Today will be my third visit and i can confidently say we have quite the love-hate relationship. Oh how i love your piers, trolleys, and excellent people watching. China town has always been a treat and the fact that Fullhouse was filmed there makes it a much more happy place. But i do not like your funky smells, impossible parking, and tourist traps... i am sorry i am not the city girl you want me to be. But Dustin wants to see your bridge, and ride your trolley so today i am more than happy to say hello once more!

the day before we left my grandpa called us vagabonds

vagabonds...

and vagabonds we were, about to embark on the greatest roadtrip of our lives so far.

the plan... well, we really had no plan. but the few things we could count on were:

the mattress- thrown in the back of the truck. This is where we would be spending all our nights pulled off to the side of dusty roads the atlas- brand spanking new & our only hope of actually getting somewhere Portland, Oregon- our final destination before heading the long highway home.

we packed our backpacks, loaded the truck & we were off. Where we were going to end up that night? we had no idea and that was ok, all i could see and think about was oregon. that lost state i have been wanting to meet for sometime now.

last night i wandered off to get some fresh night air & to stare down some stars. But the silver moon was so bright, the stars seemed to just disappear. So i moon-gazed instead. it was good to sit under the moon and clear my head. Life has been quite the roller coaster (or ferris wheel) lately & sometimes i feel a little over-whelmed. But luckily Dustin is always there to adventure with me and escape for a bit. i live for these escapes with dusty, they break up the monotony of daily life. Its crazy how much i fear monotony. Going to the same job every day is hard for me, even when i like the job i have. I don't mind doing dishes and laundry, but i think its ok to drop those things for an evening bike ride. I just don't want the daily monotony to define me...

I have had quite the flower obsession as of late; I am in dire need to know the name of every plant & flower. I find such joy in having fresh cut flowers on the kitchen table and potted plants out on the balcony... ...Its no surprise that this is happening. I grew up in a garden, my moms garden, where everyday i was surrounded by beautiful flowers of every kind. Not only flowers but a playhouse equip with everything needed for make pretend, a hammock perfect for reading a good book (or kissing boys..), a deck for many summer bbqs, wishing wells, a stream & pond, a vegetable garden, and tall trees to climb. That yard was my life and probably most of my friends life too. Every time i go back i love walking around the yard with my mom where she can tell me the name of every flower with no hesitation. Its like she went to the school for gifted young gardeners or something. My mom really does have the gift of gardening & i am hoping i got the gene.

Then while we were sitting at a fundraiser luau someone asked what day of the month it was... I replied all loud so the fam could hear "June third, exactly five months ago me and Dust got married!" Dustin looked at me...... "today is the third?? Ky, we got married on January 2nd! Isn't it my job to forget what day we got married?"

Ciao Bella! last night we flew across the Atlantic and landed in Italy just to enjoy some authentic pasta..... and we made it home in time to get to bed before midnight.

ok... maybe not quite. but that's what it felt like...

We decided our boring balcony could use a little sprucing up, so we hopped on over to target and picked up some gems to turn her into a mini Italian restaurant.

{The pictures never do it justice, because lately i am horrible at snapping quality shots}

But the balcony now sports:

- cheap, cheap but very useful bistro set

- café string lights (these remind me of italy soo bad)

- sweet smelling candles in dreamy candle holders

- old vintage tin signs on the walls

- potted flowers and veggies

- dustin delicious pasta ofcourse*

we will be spending a many summer nights in little italy.

* Have i ever told you that Dustin is absolutely amazing at cooking up a quick and delicious pasta. No recipe needed, he just throws all sorts of ingredients into a big pot and just like that Bon Appetit! the best pasta i have ever had. NO JOKE!

well, last night the truth came out. Apparently he was born in an Italian kitchen, was a cooks apprentice, learned all the works of making the perfect pasta, Then was shipped over to the states (hidden in a box that was supposedly full of macaroni) to show the world his talent.

Right now, I am so happy with my little life, but still sometimes i have those {bad} days... where crazy emotions come from absolutely nowhere.

I don't want to have those {bad} days .no more.

I feel like life is too good to waste one day with sadness.

Someday i will find my place, where nothing can disturb my peace of mind, where i am just so happily content, where no bad days will be able to break through.

It might be awhile, but I know i will never give up.

This weekend I tried tomato soup for the first time in my life its one of those things i just assumed I hated all these years. but it was actually good, really good.

i feel like my tastebuds have been reborn and are ready to try everything i supposedly "hated"....

you know the gross stuff that actually might be good, really good.

(except for ketchup. My hatred for ketchup is NOT an assumption)

Also this weekend we went out for yummy sushi (which was also one of those things i thought i hated). The chefs were so brillant and made us smile all evening.

The night of course ended with fortune cookies, where dustins told him to get in touch with his femine side. hmm. i hope thats one fortune cookie he doesnt listen to....
